The Power of White Vinegar
If there was one cleaner that I had to choose from it would be white vinegar. This non-toxic cleaner can truly handle it all. I was one of those people that my under the sink space packed full of different cleaners, one for the toilet, the windows, floors, a different household spray, etc. As I began my journey of having a non-toxic household all of these cleaners were the first to go. And I really do mean all of them. I realized that these extremely harsh and toxic chemicals were harming not only me, even though I was the only one using them, but also my son and husband. Now, I’ll save the very very long list of cleaners and why they are bad for you for another blog post. For now, lets talk about the good of white vinegar.
Vinegar is derived from alcohol, when oxygen mixes with the alcohol there is the formation of the bacteria and acetic acid which gives the mother of vinegar. Just like you could use vodka in a pinch to cleanse a wound, white vinegar, or any king of vinegar for that matter, is also bacteria cleansing. When I started replacing my toxic cleaners, I wasn’t sure how much to dilute white vinegar. The general ratio that I use now is a 1 cup to 1 gallon. So, when making a spray bottle to use for wiping down my kitchen counters I just do a small plash with my reverse osmosis water. Now the RO water doesn’t really matter, but its what I have so it’s what I use.
As I continued using white vinegar I started to wonder if there was anything else I could replace it with. And boy oh boy, there was tons. I now use different dilutions for cleaning my toilet, bathroom floors, kitchen floors, wiping down every surface in my house! I literally use it for everything. That means instead of having a separate bottle for surfaces, floor cleaner, bathroom sink, bathtub, etc. I have one bottle that I use for everything. This means wayyyy less clutter for my under the sink space.
My only hang up with white vinegar is the smell. It’s a potent smell, although I have gotten used to it, I will usually put some thieves essential oil in, just a few drops. Now I realize that essential oils are not everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s okay! But they are the only thing that I’ve found that doesn’t give me headaches. Most everything else has some sort of artificial fragrance which one is a hormone disrupter and two is terrible for your health. Thieves is also anti-bacterial, but I’ll also use lemon on occasion.
One of the last things that i'll mention about white vinegar and why it’s great, you can buy 128oz for roughly $4.00. This lasts me such a long time! So not only does it clean great, it can be used for everything, and it’s also extremely cost effective. I’m not spending my money on 20 different chemicals each month anymore.
